Karol Józef Wojtyła was elected Pope in 1978, he took the name Pope John Paul II (JPII) and addressed the world saying "Be not afraid. Open wide the doors to Christ!" In 1985, JPII started World Youth Day inspiring young people to pursue holiness. He was declared a Saint on May 1, 2011 (Divine Mercy Sunday).
